This was a game in which the Diamonds dominated possesion for large periods of the game, but could not make the most of this, missing a number of opportunities and at the end of the day the score flattered the opposition.
Coach Forrest insisted on an early start and this ensured that the team were well drilled in terms of their positions and what was expected of each of them before the game kicked off. Unusually for the Diamonds who so often tend to leak an early goal, it was the home team that struck first blood after a period of pressure Dan Forrest rocketing in a half volley from 15 yards. However within 5 minutes the opposition (who were kicking downhill in the first half were level). On 15 minutes coach forrest made a 3 man substitution with Joseph, Arran and Matthew coming on for Ashley, Mason and Curtis. This produced almost instant dividends. Diamonds had a thrown in on the right, deep into Horwich's half. will took the throw in, the ball coming into the penalty area and being partly cleared. Matthew morris was on hand though and fired a searing shot, hitting the underside of the cross bar and in for his first league goal of the season to put the Diamonds ahead 2 - 1.
In the second half the pressure continued, Joseph having a fine shot hit the bar and Daniel firing over. Horwich's 'keeper had been solid for most of the game, but made an unforced error on 53 minutes - he cleared poorly along the ground right into the advancing path of Arran, who was unmarked. Arran cooly kept his head over the ball and fired low and to the goalies left to give the Diamonds a 2 goal lead. Horwich got another back with 3 minutes to go, to set up a frantic last few minutes, however Diamonds hung on to gain a much deserved 3 points. This result has boosted the confidence of the team for their their next game and first away fixture of the season at Daisy Hill Panthers.
